ZEN PULP FICTION a LA CARTE

Author by Anonymous

July 14, 2004 -- Even up against new Hollywood renaissance restaurant “darlings” springing up here and there - Boardners is proving to withstand the test of time, and hold its own, as one of Tinsel Town's hippest laid-back eateries and bars. The slightly grim atmosphere of this Hollywood landmark bar oozes with an unforced relaxed charm which is hard to beat in a town that is surrounded by the plastic fakeness of Hollywood clubs, aggressive doormen with clipboards and guest lists! Here, you’ll never hear the words “you’re not on the guest list” – because…. there simply isn’t one!

Club owner & Entrepreneur Tricia La Belle has introduced a whole new concept in late night eatery. She’s brought in Executive Sushi Chef Ed Ai who is creating his own combination of “Asian influenced food with the Ultimate Bar Junk Food”! – and together they are creating a new Hollywood underground bar/nightclub scene -- AND not a clipboard in sight! Now not everyone likes Sushi or Asian food…but stop by Boardners any night between 7:00 – 2:00am and you just might change your mind! There’s an original, eclectic mix of nostalgia, goth, rock & roll, and alternative designer-Asian cuisine mixed with traditional bar food taking place here in a unique yet comfortable atmosphere.

The plan at Boardners is to take a vintage Hollywood Venue and mix it with the new school style of cuisine by marrying high quality Asian and American snacks foods and creating the ultimate bar foods. By using exotic ingredients and marrying Japanese sushi and cooked entrees Chef Ed uses new ideas composed within old classics! The kitchen will feature 3 menus, the Dinner Menu, the Late Nite menu and a “Chef Special” menu.

Most recently Ed was the Executive Sushi chef for 2 years at “Twist” in the Renaissance Hotel @ Hollywood and Highland. Here he designed food “on the fly” for VIP customers and worked without a menu! Known for his tempura black hot special sauce and refreshing seaweed salad, Chef Ed has grown accustomed to creating the designer “off the menu” one-of-a-kinds for his customers who range from Jimmy Kimell to Pamela Anderson. His huge following brings in the celebrity crowds, and VIP’s alike follow him wherever he goes. Before this, he was working for Wolfgang Puck’s new restaurant The Logia at The Highlands.

Along with Boardners excellent regular Classic cocktails and notoriously stiff cocktails like martinis and Manhattans, Ed will serve up a meal to delight. “Most people don’t want to think about the food” says Ed, especially if they are unfamiliar with Sushi and he finds using his own feelings to describe the food, works better than a menu.

“Eventually I just stopped using a menu and I’d say to my guests why don’t you just let me cook for you? 100% of the time, most people would say – "great, let’s do it!” Prior to this he has a background working for Wolfgang Puck as a Sous Chef in the Asian kitchen “Loggia” at the Highlands nightclub. “That restaurant was a mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Spago” says Ed. On occasion he still helps Wolfgang Puck on special events like the Academy awards. In fact he’s catered everything from the Nissan open, to movie star dinners, private celebrity dinner parties of 30 – to even 30,000 at the Rosebowl and there’s more to come. He came from the RIX sushi restaurant in St. Monica. At only 31 years of age, Ed has plenty of time to develop his alternative Sushi even further!

Chef Ed is currently busy “testing out” the new Boardners menu to include some of his old favorites –

•the well known Red Dragon a combination of Snow crab with Tempura Green Bean in the center – wrapped in Chef Ed’s own original-recipe of spicy Tuna

•The new Boardners Signature Burger - Seared mini Tuna Burgers an original Spicy Tuna recipe – Chef Ed’s own secret blend of spices

•Featuring Tandoori Roaster Chicken Wings with a Spicy Garlic Chilli sauce (Instead of typical hot wings) and Pork Spare Ribs,

•Albacore Tataki with Chef Ed’s own Specially-blended Sauces – Jalepeno Puree Sauce, Japanese Curry Sauce, with his own Signature Soy & Sweet sauce and a *Special Green Apple Ponzu Sauce

•Black Cod Tempura, Spicy Tuna Crab cakes, YellowFin sliders
